Project 1 is a group work of 5 people. We get to choose a famous architect and do a documentary on that architect. For my group, we have chosen Sou Fujimoto. We had to do our research on him and his works and so on. In the end, we made a video of him.
After that, we were instructed to select one of his projects and produce the necessary orthographic drawings. Once the drawings were done, we were to analyse the chosen building and produce a diagrammatic analysis of the building in the form of drawings which were then translated into 6cmx 6cm x 6cm conceptual models.w
Objective:
-ability to identify famous architects and their work
-understanding the basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frame.
-able to diagram and analyse work of selected architect
Reflection:
From this project, I have now recognise a new architect from a different country. It was really interesting because I got to learn alot about his work and his concept as well as getting inspired. It gave me more enthusiasm and inspiration to carry on with architecture. This project also allows me to understand and analyse a building concept.
Project 2: Bay Watch and Retreat House
This project is to design a bay watch tower and retreat house from our visit at Pantai Kerachut, Pulau Penang. We had a visit there to do our site analysis. We also went to the botanical garden and national park, we were required to enter the garden and the park to find inspiration from nature to become our concept to build the bay watch and the retreat house. Our site was divided into two site which is lake side and sea side.
Project 2A: Baywatch
We had to work in pairs for this project. We had to design a bay watch tower with maximum size of 3m x 3m x 3m. This bay watch tower is designed for a ranger and has the function for the ranger to observe, rest and other activities.
Objective:
-able to identify form and space through conceptual
-understand user requirement and simple spatial organisation skills and site responding
-understand how to design based on site context, how to respect the surrounding and how to design with simple organisation
-ability to develop architectural proposition.
-understanding how a building is conceptualised and transformed into reality
Reflection:
From this project, I have learnt the importance of communication and cooperation just like the other group projects I had. Besides, I also learnt how to translate 2D conceptual drawings into 3D conceptual model. Our concept of design was our main point to design this building. It made me realize how important it is to have a solid concept in order to create a good building. Lastly, it also made me realize that architects must explore and experience activities in order to be able to relate the building to the surrounding.
Project 2B: Retreat House
This project is related to the previous projects. However, this is individual work. We had to create a retreat house for the ranger to live and carry on with his personal activities with maximum size of 150 meter square. This projects enable us to project the concept we used for the bay watch tower and develop it into something better.
Objective:
-to understand the user specific and design requirement
-introduce notions of space, form and function in architectural design
-introduce awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis
Reflection:
This final project for studio 2 had let me achieve alot of understanding about architectural design. I learned how to expand my ideas and be confident with them. I learned about time management and how important it is for this field. Besides, i also learned how to maximize space, how to design a building with concept, how to fulfill the requirement from the user and what the user needs. Lastly, I learned to be more creative with my ideas.
